What do you GET to do today?

Change your questions. Change your life.

I love my dog. I also love walking. Truth: I don’t always love the obligation of walking my dog. (I’m human. And things that smell like “obligation” give me the hives.)

All morning today I kept telling myself I needed to take Roxy out for a walk. And I also kept finding other things to do. Not excuses per se. Just Saturday morning activities I’d rather spend time on instead. Like >> make myself a delicious cup of my favorite Costa Rican coffee. Read the newspaper. Lounge around in my PJ’s and recuperate after a loooong day of not-so-comfortable travel. Plug back into work, and catch up on what I’ve missed. Do some laundry. Watch a warm-fuzzy Christmas movie on the Hallmark channel.

All the while my poor dog is staring at me with her big, brown eyes…alternated with head-butting me on the knee to let me know she’s bored.

ALRIGHT already!

Then, just as I made the decision to go, a moment of clarity: I don’t HAVE to walk my dog today. I can certainly make that choice. AND, it’s 50 degrees outside. In December. In Montana. If I go outside with her, I GET to enjoy the privilege of an uncommonly gorgeous winter day. (Plus, the sun is shining. Total bonus.)

Mindset is a funny [and extremely impactful] thing.

Change your questions. Change your life. What do you GET to do today?

A Perspective on Failure

October 21, 2014

ladder

What if you regarded your failings + shortcomings as rungs on a ladder?

And instead of [mis]spending your time agonizing & lamenting over them, you simply learn their lesson…and then step up.

Step up and release how the rung was created, because you understand it has served its purpose.

In the end, the hurt. The pain. The weakness. The anxiety. The royally botched job you did. The trainwreck you started. The road rash on your face. The smorgasbord of crow on which you are feasting. None of these particulars matter.

You are now one step farther along your path, and your failure is actually mission accomplished.

Today: Look Up.

August 26, 2014

The other day I posted this Daily Dose [of Living Huge] on my social media:

Of course, someone had to make the comment, “At what?” Ha-ha. Hardy-har-har. Smartass. [<< My initial reaction.]

And maybe it truly was meant to be sarcastic. [<< Whatever.]

Then again, maybe the correlation with living huge isn’t clear to everyone. [<< Anything else would be a bad assumption on my part. So let’s explore this…]

What does looking up today have to do with creating & leading a bold, vibrant life?

[First this >>] When I was in high school, there was a sign posted at eye level on the door frame in the girls’ locker room. It said, “When you leave this room, make sure your head is high enough to read this sign.”

No matter what happens to you, what you’ve gone through or are going through right now, hold you head up. High enough to look people in the eye.

“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” – Maya Angelou

Look up.

[It’s about this, too >>] Observe the world. Take in the scenery. Smell the roses. EXPERIENCE and be inspired by what’s going on around you rather than just trudging along, so completely focused on the 3-feet right in front of your feet that you miss…well, everything.

Look up.

[Let’s not forget this >>] See your Life. Your Big Picture. Keep your eye on the horizon while boldly navigating the path in front of you today. OWN IT with all of its joys and shortcomings. Take steps today that your future self will thank you for.

Look up.

[And last, but not in the least >>] See that you’re not alone. Connect & reconnect. Ask for help. Offer yours. Give 100% in your relationships. Shift your focus off of me-myself-and-I and look for opportunities where you can be of service to others.

Look up. A small action with big impact.

These are a few of the ways I connect looking up + living huge. How do you see it?
